Sensitivity Training:

How To Successfully Interact with Individuals Who Have
Impaired Communication Abilities

1 in 54 children are diagnosed with Autism

1 in 6 children have a learning disability

3 million Americans stutter

1 million Americans have Aphasia

These are just a few statistics that demonstrate how prevalent communication impairments are in our world. The numbers continue to grow, year after year. People with disabilities are part of our society.

They are in your stores, your restaurants, and they are people you serve everyday.

It is essential to treat them with dignity and respect!

Sometimes what we do not understand, we have difficulty empathizing with.

My job is to make sure your employees and service workers understand the disorders, know what to look for, and teach you how to best interact and communicate with those individuals.

What Is Sensitivity Training for Communication Impaired Special Needs Populations?

Sensitivity training for special needs population is for personell that are not familiar with people with communication impairments, but interact with the public frequently.

Why Do People Need This Type of Training?

Sensitivity training for communicating with individuals who have special needs and communication impairments is so important in the world we live in today! Here in NY, a very litigious state, we throw lawsuits around like they are beach balls. It's so easy to get slapped with one for discrimination of a person with a disability. The "I didn't know" line doesn't really work after the fact. Don't believe it can happen to you?
Check out this one from April 2020. $275,000 awarded to settle disability discrimination lawsuit. There are more! To see a larger list, click here.

Why Should A Speech Pathologist Teach This Type of Course?

Picture
While we are aware there are many choices available to you with this same label, they are 99% of the time not taught by someone with a deep understanding and knowledge of communication disorders and impairments. We have a very specific skill set that is valuable for your employees that can help them identify the type of communication impairment they are seeing and what they can do about it.

Why Are Live Classes More Successful?

In a live class, we role play, discuss scenarios, and answer questions that come up in real time. Many people who complete online trainings are often skipping through and just skimming the information. They never develop the depth of knowledge they need to in order to communicate successfully. If your organization has a real issue, it is best to address the issues and answer questions about specific scenarios in person.

What If Me Or One Of My Staff Members Has Difficulty In Social Situations?

This is an area we call 'soft skills'. This is worked on individually or in small groups and this can be accomplished via tele-therapy as well. Soft skills are those invisible skills we use everyday, like judging when to enter a conversation, how to interrupt someone, reading body language, etc. To learn more about this, click here.

What Our Clients Are Saying

I’ve had such a wonderful experience with Cove Speech Language And Feeding Therapy. They helped my son go from not wanting to put any solid foods even close to his mouth, to trying all sorts of new foods in just a few months. The therapists worked with him on his sensory issues, on self-feeding, and on learning to chew. They were patient and friendly, and through play, made it a very enjoyable experience for my son. I highly recommend this practice to anyone who needs speech and/or feeding therapy. I will never forget how much they helped my son and I am forever grateful to them." -Sheena R.
